Alaska Bears

NATURAL CONNECTION

The coastal brown bears of Lake Clark National Park, and KATMAI NATIONAL PARK, are one of Alaska’s true wonders.  This area is home to the largest population of brown bears on the planet.

Alaska’s Coastal Brown Bears are the largest land based predator on earth.  Large males regularly grow to over half a ton.  During the summer of 2021 I was fortunate enough to spend about a week with these amazing animals in these two areas and were able to photograph them in the meadows of sedge, clamming on the beaches and fishing during the salmon run in Brooks Falls.

These images are full of vibrant detail, and printed large format, will make an unmatched impression for those who visit your home or office.

Blue Shark near Cabo San Lucas, Baja Sur. Had a great encounter with this blue shark. Can’t wait to get back down that way for some more underwater photography!

I’ve been a big fan of Gura Gear for a long time, and this is my go to bag when shooting wildlife. I really like how I can get all my gear, including long lenses like the Sony 400 f2.8, or the 200-600mm, on a body and in this bag, along with an entire other side of the bag for second camera, more lenses, drones, action cameras, etc. Everything from the rip stop fabric this bag is made of, to the fit, this bag is amazing! And best of all…it fits on overhead space on airlines, and under seats. I have never had to check this bag! #guragear ...

For some time now, I’ve been using this chest harness called the Cotton Carrier to carry 2 cameras on body. Being able to carry them this way, and have them easily accessible in the field, without having to get them in and out of a bag, has been extremely efficient, and it has made me faster, and able to adapt better to things that happen in the field. In turn, it has led to more shots. I carry two Sony a1’s, one with the Tamron 35-1500mm f2.0 to 2.,8, and one with the Sony 200-600mm f5. 6-6.3 , which gives me a total zoom range of 35mm to 600. Not too bad of a range for wildlife! #sonyartisan #sonyalpha #tamron #tamronlens #sony200600 #cottoncarrier #bedfordsokc ...

One of the biggest questions we get on wildlife photo tours is “What lens should I take?” One thing that I have learned over the years, is to keep it as simple as I can with my gear. I found the best solution for me personally when shooting wildlife with 2 lenses, the Tamron 35-150mm f2.0-2.8, and the Sony 200-600mm f5.6-6.3, giving me a total range of 35mm to 600mm. Both lenses are light and can both be carried easily in the field.

Another Great White shark taken at Guadalupe Island. I spent 5 days aboard the "Belle Amie", spending hours in the cage daily photographing and videoing these amazing great whites. I remember at one time, we had 6 or 7 great whites in the water.

It was an amazing experience, and I hope to be able to do it again someday, but for now, the waters are closed at Guadalupe Island.

Sunrise over the water at Guadalupe Island, where I spent 5 days diving with great white sharks. I will never forget this morning, as it was the first morning we were in the water.

Face to face with a 1600 pound great white shark probably isn’t what anyone wants to encounter in the ocean, but in 2021, I had an incredible experience when I got this shot of a great white near Guadalupe island. I spent 5 days living aboard a ship, spending hours in the cage each day to photograph these great whites. I had no idea what to expect before the trip, and honestly, as the days got closer to me going, I felt my confidence wane. But, as soon as I got into the cage, submersed in the cool north pacific water, all my fears subsided. The weightlessness, the sun rays through the cool, intense blue water, and the sound of the oxygen tanks, I found an unexplainable comfort in the cage.

I learned a lot about sharks and their behavior on that trip, and I left with a totally different understanding of great whites. I really want to return someday, but since that trip, Guadalupe island has now been closed. It was closed under the intent to protect the sharks, but with no activity, research, or anyone out in the waters, many fear that it will only increase threats to the sharks through illegal fishing and poaching. Let’s hope for the best… and hopefully tours will be restored in the future.

Next moth I will be gearing up for some more underwater photography in a different area, focusing on humpbacks, orcas, rays, seals, and whatever else we can find.
