Description
“Family Tradition”- Bears fishing on Brooks Falls, Katmai, Alaska. The positioning is very important when it comes to the falls, and fishing for salmon swimming upstream. The mother bear, shown here with the fish in her mouth, was always at this top spot with her two cubs. This spot is a significant one, as most of the fish caught on the falls are caught from this position.
One of the rangers there told our group that she had worked her way to that spot from the back of the falls earlier in the season. She was tested daily for that spot, but she always prevailed. When she would catch one, she would take it over to the side and share it with her cubs. After she was done, she was right back out there challenging whoever had filled in her spot.
