"ANGES BLANCS" - Limited Edition 500 - White Horses of Camargue, France
I have wanted to photograph these horses for the past 10 years. Bold, white horses that run through the waters in Southwest France. Their home is Camargue, France. For centuries, these small horses, the “Cheval de Carmargue”, have lived wild in the harsh environment of the Camargue marshes and wetlands of the Rhône delta. There they developed the stamina, hardiness and agility for which they are known today. Traditionally, they lived in semi-feral conditions in the marshy land of the region. The Camargue horse is the traditional mount of the gardians, the Camargue riders who herd the black Camargue bulls used for courses camarguaises in southern France.
I only had 4 days to photograph them, and the weather was not looking good, as I flew half way across the world to see them. It was calling for rain and clouds for the entire week, and the first day shooting indicated that I would just have to settle for what I could get. On the second day, we woke up to more rain and more dark skies. However, later that afternoon, we got a break in the storms. We met the horses on a nearby beach, and it was amazing light! These photos are from that brief session photographing the "Anges Blancs" or white angels of Camargue, running on the beach.
